Getting Rid of Anger—Part 5

"And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice (Ephesians 4:30-31 NIV)."

Some time back, I had several encounters with a rather nasty individual at the church I used to attend. At the time, I wasn't doing particularly well and I didn't know how to deal with the situation. As a result, Satan acquired a spiritual foothold.

The foothold could have been avoided if I had simply rebuked this individual (Luke 17:3).

The strength of this foothold did not become evident until years later when I came under repeated spiritual attacks and was unable to break free. Nothing I tried worked.

I brought the issue to the Lord, in prayer, and I sought counsel from my sister. I knew, from experience, that I needed to wait upon the Lord until it became clear what to do. And this did take some time.

I needed to know what to do and how to do it. And, God's counsel was needed for both.

It became clear that I needed to contact this individual. But, had I done so personally, I likely would have been re-injured as a result of another nasty response. So I simply wrote him a letter something like this:

I am writing this letter in an attempt to have more peace.

Some time back, we had several negative interactions that continue to be a problem for me. I will apologize for any angry feelings.

I didn't include any more information than that. Nor did I include my last name or give a return address. The phrase "I will apologize for any angry feelings" was verbiage a pastoral counselor taught me to use in such situations years ago.

The letter included the elements necessary for such a letter to be effective.

  • It stated that I was offended.
  • It included all offenses.
  • It was not condemning.
  • It allowed us to part ways on good terms.

As soon as the letter was mailed, I felt much better. That's all I needed to do.
