How to Develop Courage

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV)."

"Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them (Jeremiah 1:17 NIV),"

If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them (Luke 17:3 NIV)."

One thing is clear from Scripture: God wants Christians to be courageous. In fact, it's a command from God. But how does this come about?

Pastor Bill Wilson of Metro Ministries addressed this issue when he last spoke at the church I attend. Pastor Wilson stated something like this: "You don't get strength for the conflict. You get strength from the conflict." That is, you gain strength and courage by standing up to the wicked and other wrongdoers, despite your fears. That is the only way to develop courage.

If you stand up to the challenge, you gain courage that can be used for future challenges. You will become more comfortable and confident in asserting yourself. If you do not stand up, Satan gets a spiritual foothold and then you need to struggle to forgive.

There are times when God does want us to "turn the other cheek." Scripture makes this clear. But I would make the argument that this is not usually the case.

One of the most growing experiences in my life was working for the Training Center, a Christian drug and alcohol rehab. At this facility, I facilitated groups of men right out of prison. They would walk over you if they could. You had to confront these men or else. It was not fun, but it was a growing experience.

So, when conflict arises, recognize that standing up in the conflict, rather than cowering, is what is required. It will benefit your emotions. And it will enable you to to be more courageous whenever the next challenge arises.

Parents can also teach their children to be courageous with their peers when these teaching opportunities arise. It will greatly improve the quality of their lives.

So remember: God wants Christians to be courageous. Developing courage is part of God's plan for your life.

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV)."
