Bitterness

"And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you (Ephesians 4:30-32 NIV)."

"Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled . . . (Hebrews 12:14-15 NKJV)."

God commands that His children not be bitter. Here's how you do it.

First, recognize that bitterness is a sin. No matter what happened. And forgiveness is always required.

Second, do what you can to reduce your anger and prevent anger from building up in the future. On this website, there are articles on Anger Management, How to Forgive and a series on Getting Rid of Anger.

Third: Pray to be free of bitterness: "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him (1 John 5:14-15 NIV)."

"But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord (James 1:6-7 NIV)."
