Why Psychology (Usually) Doesn't Work

Secular therapy usually doesn't work. There are, of course, some exceptions.

This website represents what I wish I had known when I was a young man.

I struggled with chronic anxiety, depression and other issues as well. Sometimes the anxiety or depression was severe. And sometimes, I felt suicidal.

I lost a decade of my life reading psychology books and going to therapy.

Near the end of that decade, I remember exclaiming, in a group therapy session: "They (therapists) don't have anything!" The therapist, leading the group, responded "I haven't seen any cures."

That therapist, however, did help me. Once, in her group, when I was raving that there is no god and that religion is a bunch of nonsense, she, via her facial expression, made it clear that she felt it was tragic that I believed what I believed. That was the first time, in my life, that someone I viewed as intelligent believed that there was a God. And the seed that she planted, without saying a word, eventually grew into the website you are looking at now.

I did not grow up in a Christian family. I did not know anything about God.

Making progress was a slow process, but was based on three decisions that worked for me:

  • I stopped going to secular therapy.
  • I stopped taking my medication.
  • I looked to the Bible and Christian ministry for the answers that I needed. Including some Christian counselors, licensed and unlicensed.

Never abruptly discontinue taking psychotropic medication without your doctor's approval; that can be dangerous.

Secular therapy did provide some benefits: There were some things that I really did need to talk about. And group therapy did teach me how to better relate to other people.

However, there were also adverse affects from the therapy: I acted on some really bad advice. And I acquired the idea that I must always talk about everything that is even a little bit disturbing.

On balance, I was worse off than when I started.

Fast forward: I am now a retired Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and actively participate in ministry at my church. Including counseling other Christians.

Psychology doesn't work because there are spiritual factors involved in most mental health issues. Secular professionals do not understand, nor do they have any ability to address, these spiritual issues.

Psychology doesn't work because you can't fix yourself. You have a part to play—but only God can make it possible for you to be successful.

You were created by God; you are not the product of evolution. If you have any doubts about the existence of God, I have two suggestions for you:

You will succeed if you have God's help—and don't give up. Without God's help, you can expect to continue to fail.

If you want to try this approach, without doing a lot of reading, you can go directly to my article entitled A Quick Start Guide.

God loves you and will provide the answers you are looking for. You will not find them anywhere else.
