How to Use the Bible to Get Physical HealingStart with the promise. Bless the Lord, my soul, {Psalm 103:1-5 NASB} Pray in faith. And Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." {Mark 11:22-24 ESV} "For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it." {Hebrews 4:2 KJV} Pray in tongues. This can make your prayers more effective for a variety of reasons. Persist in prayer. Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not become discouraged, saying, "In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect any person. Now there was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, 'Give me justice against my opponent.' For a while he was unwilling; but later he said to himself, 'Even though I do not fear God nor respect any person, yet because this widow is bothering me, I will give her justice; otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.'" And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unrighteous judge said; now, will God not bring about justice for His elect who cry out to Him day and night, and will He delay long for them? I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. {Luke 18:1-8 NASB} Get church elders to pray for you. "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." {James 5:14-16 NIV} Do your part. "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!" {Matthew 7:7-11 ESV} An examination of the original Greek text indicates that this Scripture is telling us to "keep on asking," "keep on seeking" and "keep on knocking." God will not provide what you need if, had you kept trying, you would have been able to find the answer for yourself. Additional advice follows. Pray, in faith, believing what the Bible says is true—not what you're feeling or a doctor's negative prognosis. Believe that with persistent prayer, combined with faith, you will get your desired result. Recognize that when you pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit is praying. And He has no lack of faith. Avoid listening to those who say this will never work. This can sabotage your efforts. Getting other Christians to pray with you and for you is a really good idea (Matthew 18:19-20). Recognize, also, that some Christians do have a gift of healing (1 Corinthians 12:9). Seek these people out. If you're willfully tolerating sin in your life, or have no interest in serving God, it's much less likely that your prayers will be answered. Be open to seeking medical advice/treatment if you feel the Holy Spirit is leading you in that direction. Seek out advice from others. You don't know what you don't know. "Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in an abundance of counselors there is victory." {Proverbs 11:14 NASB} Recognize that the pain may be an integral part of your body healing: pain can, for example, stabilize a joint so it can heal. I've experienced healing in both my back and a knee. If I had taken pain killers, the healing would not have taken place. With medical issues, you can often find real solutions if you keep looking. Even if the doctors you consult with don't have much to offer. My father had severe leg cramps. The doctor he consulted suggested only pain-relieving drugs—which my father refused. I found, however, that giving him calcium, and half as much magnesium to prevent constipation, resolved the problem. Beware of quack remedies. If someone, other than a licensed physician, is trying to sell you something, it's probably a quack remedy. "He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered." {Proverbs 28:26 NKJV} We all are responsible for the consequences of the decisions we make. Walk wisely. Take care of your health:
If you're not taking care of your health, you are not walking wisely. And shirking this responsibility makes it unlikely that prayers for healing will be answered. Don't do anything that makes things worse. Pain is generally an indication that you're doing something wrong. Don't do anything that causes or increases pain unless you've been advised otherwise by a licensed medical provider.
