Idolatry

"I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me." {Exodus 20:2-3 NASB}

'Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more." {Psalm 16:4 NIV}

Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf." {Proverbs 11:28 NIV}

"For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." {1 Timothy 6:10 NASB}

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." {Proverbs 4: 23 KJV}

"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." {1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV}

An idol is anything you love more than God. Money and possessions are the most common idols in our culture.

There's nothing wrong with wealth and nice things. However, these things cannot be allowed to become more important to us than God.

Don't allow any idol to captivate your heart. It will impede your prayers and, in time, result in much unnecessary suffering. This is something you can do.

Two suggestions:

  • Tithe your income. This is a biblical requirement. It will result in blessings in your life far in excess of your tithe. It will also help you to avoid idolatry.
  • "Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established. {Proverbs 16:3 NKJV} Get involved in ministry.

Some closing quotes follow.

"You don't need to go to foreign lands to find false gods. America is full of them. Whatever you love more than God is your idol." {Dwight L. Moody}

"Idolatry never exalts a man, but rather brings him low."1
