The World System
"We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one." {1 John 5:19 NIV}
"Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ." {Colossians 2:8 NKJV}
When the Bible talks about 'the world', what is really being described is a 'world system.'
It is the opposite of the 'kingdom of God.' Both are opposing systems.
"The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." {John 10:10 NKJV}
In most systems, both of these opposing systems manifest.
Health care is one example.
If you take your child to a hospital emergency room, with a broken arm, you can expect state of the art medical care and for your child to make a full recovery. Many hospitals were founded by Christians.
However, if you take a child to a medical provider because he is persistently hyperactive and/or disruptive in class, you can expect diagnoses like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. You can also expect that the child will likely be placed on psychotropic medication.
Psychotropic medication is very damaging to both the child's physical and mental health. It can, however, reduce undesirable behaviors.
I would note that when I went to elementary school—in the 1950s and 1960s—there were no such children. You had to control your behavior or you would get a spanking. And I don't remember ever hearing of a kid being given psychotropic drugs.
Human nature has not changed.
Biblical perspectives have diminished and the World System has become increasingly influential.
The same thing is true in other systems as well.
Child protective services, for example, do attempt to protect children from legitimate abuse issues. However, they also harass good parents who, for legitimate reasons, and within reason, spank their children. This is also very damaging to families.
In today's world, the World System is the increasingly predominant spiritual force.
This is what happens when societies discard biblical values.
