A Pastor's Testimony

The following was excerpted from The Fear Of The Lord Copyright ©2004 by Pastor David Hoffman. Pastor Hoffman is one of two senior pastors at Foothills Christian Church in El Cajon, California.

"My personal commitment to support children and youth ministry comes from my sincere desire to spare others the pain I suffered. When I was about 12 or 13 years old I decided that church was an impediment to having fun. It seemed God had rules forbidding everything that interested me! They seemed antiquated . . . just like the people who went to church. I thought, "The Bible was written so long ago it has nothing to do with life today. And the people at church seem so out of touch with the real world!" So I made a choice to go my own way . . . I wanted nothing to do with God! That one decision bred destruction in almost every area of my life and nearly resulted in my death."

"Approximately nine years after I rejected God and church I was under the care of a psychiatrist. I had taken so many drugs and probably killed so many brain cells that I had lost the ability to think normally. Doctors could not help me beyond prescribing drugs to sedate me. When I was not on medication I was afraid of everything! I was a mess . . . the consequence for choosing to disobey God."
