How to Develop Habits—Part 1

This is Part 1 in a series on developing habits.

Here I will explain an easy way to establish good habits—and correct bad ones.

Habits are just habits; they are not the result of spiritual warfare. Therefore, human effort, alone, can be effective

Simply say, out loud, five different affirmations every time you find yourself engaging in a habitual behavior that you'd like to change.

The example that follows involves my old bad habit of wasting money by opening the refrigerator unnecessarily.

Here's the example:

  • "I will think before opening the refrigerator."
  • "I will always think before opening the refrigerator."
  • "Always think before opening the refrigerator.
  • "Always think, then open the refrigerator."
  • "Think first, then open the refrigerator."

It's that simple. The habit will become established, over time, if you are consistent in using this technique.

Since I wrote this article, I have used this technique, successfully, in all kinds of ways. Everything from avoiding becoming distracted during prayer to being sure to remember where I parked the car.

It is simple, effective and easy to use.
