How to Pray for Physical HealingBless the Lord, my soul, {Psalm 103:1-5 NASB} "For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it." {Hebrews 4:2 KJV} And Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." {Mark 11:22-24 ESV} "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!" {Matthew 7:7-11 ESV} An examination of the original Greek text indicates that this Scripture is telling us to "keep on asking," "keep on seeking" and "keep on knocking." Specific advice on how to pray for healing follows: Pray, in faith, believing what the Bible says is true—not what you're feeling or a doctor's negative prognosis. Believe that you're healed now in the spiritual realm and that later, in the future, with persistent prayer, you will be healed in the physical realm. Unwavering faith and persistence in prayer, daily, are required for success. Avoid listening to those who say this will never work. This can sabotage your efforts. That's it. General related advice. Getting other Christians to pray with you and for you is a really good idea (Matthew 18:19-20). If you're willfully tolerating sin in your life, or have no interest in serving God, it's much less likely that your prayers will be answered. Be open to seeking medical advice/treatment if you feel the Holy Spirit is leading you in that direction. Seek out wise advice from others (Proverbs 19:20). Recognize that the pain may be an integral part of your body healing: pain can stabilize the joint so it can heal. I've experienced healing in both my back and a knee. If I had taken pain killers, the healing would not have taken place. With medical issues, you can often find real solutions if you keep looking. Even if the doctors you consult with don't have much to offer. My father had severe leg cramps. The doctor he consulted suggested only pain relieving drugs—which my father refused. I found, however, that giving him calcium, and half as much magnesium to prevent constipation, resolved the problem. Beware of quack remedies. If someone, other than a licensed physician, is trying to sell you something, it's probably a quack remedy. "He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered." {Proverbs 28:26 NKJV} We all are responsible for the consequences of the decisions we make. Walk wisely. Take care of your health:
If you're not taking care of your health, you are not walking wisely. And shirking this responsibility makes it unlikely that prayers for healing will be answered. Don't do anything that makes things worse. Pain is generally an indication that you're doing something wrong. Don't do anything that causes or increases pain unless you've been advised otherwise by a licensed medical provider. Finally, the video series How to Fight for Your Healing by Peggy Joyce Ruth Ministries is highly recommended. Note: Related article: Dealing With Physical Pain. |
