Dealing With Physical PainMany Christians do have chronic, physical pain issues. Here are some suggestions. First: Recognize that thoughts, focusing on the pain, can be a spiritual attack. If you recognize that a thought is coming from a demon, it is necessary to think about something else. Resist the devil; don't help him. Second: limit the amount of time you think about pain issues. Think about pain issues only when such thoughts are necessary—like when you're deciding on a course of action to make things better. This is something you can do.
Third, recite Scripture, preferably out loud. Examples:
"For the word of God is living and active . . ." {Hebrews 4:12 NASB} This is a way of training your mind not to focus on negatives. Fourth: use affirmations to strengthen your resolve and adjust your perspective. Examples:
We all have a choice as to how we live the lives God has given us. Pain does not have to result in misery. One of the nicest, most pleasant people I've ever met, is currently leading a ministry team I'm a member of. She has chronic pain—problems with both knees. She also has tinnitus. Fifth: Recognize that the pain may be an integral part of your body healing: pain can stabilize the joint so it can heal. I've experienced healing in both my back and a knee. If I had taken pain killers, the healing would not have taken place. Of course, don't do anything that makes the pain worse unless a licensed medical provider tells you to. Sixth: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened (Matthew 7:7-8 NASB)." An examination of the original Greek text indicates that this Scripture is telling us to "keep on asking," "keep on seeking" and "keep on knocking." You don't know what you don't know. Look for ways to make things better. Look for solutions online. Some recommended websites to check out:
With medical issues, you can often find real solutions if you keep looking. Even if the doctors you consult with don't have much to offer. My father had severe leg cramps. The doctor he consulted suggested only pain relieving drugs—which my father refused. I found, however, that giving him calcium, and half as much magnesium to prevent constipation, resolved the problem. Beware of quack remedies. If someone, other than a licensed physician, is trying to sell you something, it's probably a quack remedy. Seventh: "Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things." {Colossians 3:2 NIV} Focus on serving God, helping people and increasing your future heavenly reward. Eighth: Avoid accidents that will create additional problems for you. Remember:
Walk wisely. "He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered." {Proverbs 28:26 NKJV} We all are responsible for the consequences of the decisions we make. You are never safe whenever you stop trusting God. You are never safe whenever you give in to fear. You are never safe when you fail to walk wisely. "He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered." {Proverbs 28:26 NKJV} We all are responsible for the consequences of the decisions we make. Walk wisely. Ninth: Take care of your health:
If you're not taking care of your health, you are not walking wisely. And you will experience increased, and unnecessary, distress. Don't do anything that makes things worse. Pain is generally an indication that you're doing something wrong. Don't do anything that causes or increases pain unless you've been advised otherwise by a licensed medical provider. Finally: Pray for healing. Two recommended resources follow:
Note: For another example of faith healing, read God's Medicine Bottle by Derek Prince. The author describes how he used a simple, biblical approach, when nothing else would work, to heal his chronic eczema. |
