Stopping Spiritual Attacks—Part One

Spiritual attacks are the result of spiritual warfare. This is a challenge every Christian will face. These attacks will consist of the following:

  • Unwanted thoughts.
  • Disturbing emotions.
  • Both.

There is no way to stop Satan from putting unwanted thoughts into your mind, but you can avoid entertaining these thoughts. And there is no way to completely eliminate disturbing emotions, but you can diminish the disturbance that you experience.

This is Part One of a series on effective ways of dealing with unwanted thoughts and disturbing emotions. The series will teach you how to resist demonic attacks.

It is recommended that you read the entire series.

Part One is a quick overview. There are four points.

First: "Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray." {James 5:13 NASB}

Pray when you come under spiritual attacks:

  • The prayer, itself, will help.
  • God can bring clarity to the situation.
  • God can provide guidance
  • It becomes clearer whatever else may be needed.
  • Praying in tongues can make prayers more effective.
  • Persisting in prayer may be necessary.

Second: Recite Scripture:

Examples:

  • "Be anxious for nothing . . ." {Philippians 4:6 NASB}
  • "Trust in Him at all times . . ." {Psalm 62:8 NASB}

"For the word of God is living and active . . ." {Hebrews 4:12 NASB}

Third: Use affirmations based on Scripture.

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might." {Ephesians 6:10 NASB}

Example: I am 'strong in the Lord.'

Fourth: Monitor your self-talk. Your words have power. Your self-talk needs to be rational and comforting—at all times. Self-talk is always a choice. Correct negative thoughts.

Finally: Use this general purpose affirmation: "I'm not receiving that." This can also be used to counter negative thoughts coming from a demon.

Then, think about something else.

". . . whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right . . . think about these things." {Philippians 4:8 NASB}
