How to Lead a Group
Leading a group, when you're ready, is a great way of helping other people and making disciples.
Guidelines follow.
First, establish rules for the group.
Examples:
- Whatever is said in the group, stays in the group.
- Treat each other with respect.
- Do not talk when someone else is sharing unless the person asks for advice.
- Exception: The leader is exempt since he/she needs to be able to respond to any issues that may arise (eg. suicidal thoughts).
Second: enforce group rules.
Examples:
- If someone, contrary to group rules, interrupts when another person is sharing, confront the person immediately. Repeat the person's name, somewhat elevating the tone of your voice, until the person stops talking.
- Example: "JOHN, JOHN, JOHN! Remember the group rules. We don't talk when others are sharing."
- Don't tolerate other inappropriate behavior. Start by talking with an offender privately.
- Example: While I was leading a group, I got a complaint from a woman about another group member, a man. He walked up to her and gave her a hug. I pulled the man aside and said: "This is how things work. If a woman wants to give you a hug, you can give her a hug. Otherwise, we do not touch them." I had no further problems with the man.
Don't allow anyone to continue in the group who continues to disregard the rules you set for the group.
